Health & Safety Policy — Aldgate Skip Hire
This Health and Safety policy sets out the commitments of Aldgate Skip Hire to protect employees, contractors and members of the public involved in our skip hire and rubbish removal operations. Our approach is proactive and practical: we will prevent harm through risk-based planning, clear responsibilities and continuous improvement. The policy applies to all operations including skip delivery, skip collection, bulky waste removal and on-site waste management across our rubbish company service area.
We recognise that a well-managed rubbish company must integrate safety into everyday work. Senior management will ensure appropriate resources are available so that safety procedures, vehicle maintenance, training and personal protective equipment are supplied and consistently enforced. Everyone on site must cooperate to reduce risk and promote a safe working environment. This includes drivers, operatives, office staff and subcontractors who all share a duty to work safely and to challenge unsafe practices.
Risk assessment is central to our safety system. Before any skip is placed or collected, a site-specific assessment will identify hazards such as traffic conflict, underground utilities, manual handling challenges and hazardous materials concealed within loads. Controls include safe access arrangements, segregation of materials, safe lifting methods, clear exclusion zones, and suitable signage to protect the rubbish collection service area workforce and the public. Assessments are documented, reviewed and updated when site conditions change.
All employees and contractors are assigned clear roles and responsibilities: managers for policy implementation, supervisors for daily oversight and operatives for following safe systems of work. Lines of responsibility are recorded and communicated so that accountability is transparent and consistent across our skip hire service area. Supervisors will confirm that staff understand the risks and controls before work begins.
Training is mandatory and tailored to role. Induction training covers vehicle loading limits, safe securing of loads, use of lifting equipment and recognition of hazardous wastes. Key training topics include:
- Safe manual handling and use of mechanical aids
- Correct use of PPE and high-visibility clothing
- Identification and segregation of hazardous materials
- Vehicle interface and site traffic management
Personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, high-visibility clothing, steel-toe boots and appropriate eye protection is provided and must be used whenever required. Where tasks demand additional protection, operatives will be briefed and supervised. Our rubbish removal teams receive instruction on manual handling techniques, spill control, safe handling of sharps, and the correct response to chemical or biological hazards. PPE standards are audited and replaced as necessary.
Vehicle and plant safety is critical to protect our workforce and the public. Regular inspections, servicing and pre-shift checks ensure that lorries, cranes, lifts and tail-lifts are safe to operate. Drivers must follow safe driving policies, obey load securing standards and adhere to driving time limits to protect road safety in the skip hire service area. Loading operations will be supervised and conducted on stable, level ground with clear communication between operatives and drivers.
Waste segregation, recycling and environmental controls reduce hazards and support sustainable disposal. We enforce no illegal dumping and maintain documentation for waste types, transfer notes and disposal routes to minimise exposure to harmful materials and to ensure compliance with environmental requirements. Emergency procedures cover spill response, fire, first aid and identification of suspect materials; trained personnel and spill kits are available during all operational periods.
To support reporting and continual improvement, we maintain an incident reporting system and conduct regular audits of operations and sites. Near misses and hazards are recorded promptly, investigated and used to improve risk controls. Findings from investigations feed into training, method statements and operating procedures. Performance indicators for safety and environmental compliance are reviewed by management quarterly and are used to set measurable improvement targets.
Communication and consultation with staff are ongoing priorities. We hold regular safety meetings, distribute notices and encourage employees to raise concerns and suggest safer ways of working. Open dialogue helps identify emerging risks in our rubbish collection service area and ensures that controls remain practical and effective for front-line teams.
Health and wellbeing measures include provision for appropriate rest breaks, access to hydration and facilities, and support for employees affected by incidents. Mental health awareness and support mechanisms are promoted so our teams remain fit for duty while delivering skip hire and waste removal services. Welfare considerations are part of operational planning, especially for prolonged or physically demanding tasks.
